Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert have made up their minds to adopt an orphan boy, but when tender-hearted Matthew goes to collect the child, he finds he has been sent a skinny red-headed girl with plenty to say for herself. At first the Cuthberts, especially practical, down-to-earth Marilla, are dismayed, but Anne Shirley proves so extraordinary, so imaginative, so romantic, so hot-tempered and so well-intentioned that she brings out the goodness in everyone she meets.
